Alsof het zich in de verkeerde volgorde afspeelt. Comebackplaat The Universal Want werd in 2020 goed ontvangen, maar de bijbehorende tour afgezegd. Zanger Jimi Goodwin, 
die al jaren gebukt ging onder een tegenwerkende psyche, nam de tijd om te genezen en van zijn verslavingen af te komen. 
Nu, vier jaar later, is daar de tweede worp van de tweede ronde: een plaat die worstelt naar het licht, die een hand wil vastpakken. 
Doves wil, in de woorden van gitarist en liedjesschrijver Jez Williams, ‘je begrepen laten voelen’.

En inderdaad: Constellations For The Lonely is een warme deken. 
De ruis waarmee opener Renegade aftrapt, maakt al snel plaats voor de kenmerkende epiek. Smaakvoller dan Coldplay, minder beleefd dan Elbow – maar schaamteloos. 
Al zijn de momenten waarop gas teruggenomen wordt eigenlijk het mooist. In The Butterfly House geeft ruimte aan de prachtige stem van Goodwin, 
die moeiteloos kan zweven over galmende gitaren. Oversturen kan ook, in Strange Weather bijvoorbeeld, waarin ineens de tronie van Matthew Bellamy om de hoek 
lijkt te piepen en zo zijn we niet getrouwd, ga maar weer weg, al is het synthesizeroutro nog zo cool. Maar laat je maar eens niet inpalmen door het golvende Saint Teresa, 
gij cynicus. Het is eigenlijk muziek uit een andere tijd, deze nieuwe Doves, een tijd zonder ironie of dubbele lagen. 
Een band van toen die muziek maakt zoals toen en dat doet met een oprechtheid en integriteit waar je bij jongere bandjes héél goed naar moet zoeken.

Doves’ last album, The Universal Want, arrived after a decade-long hiatus that had threatened to look permanent.
Landing a comparatively swift five years later, frontman Jimi Goodwin’s ongoing health issues meant that much of Constellations for the Lonely was recorded without him, 
and while lyrically the album frequently dwells upon isolation and estrangement (“If you walk out that door then you’re walking out forever,” 
Goodwin sings on opener ‘Renegade’, a Blade Runner-inspired update of 2005’s Black and White Town), musically, the trio sound more robust than ever.
There’s a cinematic sense of scale to the likes of ‘Cold Dreaming’, ‘In the Butterfly House’’s fluttering arpeggios trace similar patterns to In Rainbows-era Radiohead, while bombastic
closer Southern Bell even bears the unlikely influence of Queen.
Due to the circumstances, guitarist Jez Williams takes the lead on more tracks than is customary, including gorgeous, Smiths-referencing highlight Last Year’s Man.
But despite a difficult incubation, Doves soar here.
